River: O'Sullivans rapid
Participants: DOIG kayak with Zak, Phil and Jess
Duration of activity: 3 hours
Incidents/injuries: None
River was very low. We were in slalom boats and practiced strokes and eddying. Felt uncomfortable in them and was nervous doing fairy glide at bottom at of O'Sullivans rapid. I need to get my confidence up and stop thinking 'plastic coffin'.

Date: 8/03/13

Participants: DOIG Kayak with Zak, Phil and Jess
Duration of activity: 6 hours
Incidents/injuries: Alice swam after a deck implosion

Date: 9/03/13
River: Pool then Doctors creek section
Participants: DOIG kayak with Zak, Phil and Jess
Duration of activity: 6 hours

Another pool session with creek boats. We then went to doctors where we practiced rescues in our creek boats. We did H rescue, T rescue, hand of god, barrel rolling, releasing a cows tail underwater, assisted fairy, stern deck carry and rescue of unconscious swimmer. We then practiced getting into and out of our boats in awkward spots and did an abseil with a make shift harness.

Date: 10/03/13
River: Earthquake section, Buller River
Participants: DOIG kayak with Zak, Phil and Jess
Duration of activity: 4 hours

We went in our creek boats today. We practiced our river running which was eddying, fairying, river running and scouting and also practiced some rescues and rolls.

Date: 7/05/13
River: Grey high pool then the harbour
Clients: John Paul Students with Jake and Jono
Duration of activity: 4 hours
Incidents/injuries:
Today we taught them about the equipment used in kayaking and then got them some water confidence in the pool. One boy had very little confidence so I spent most of the session with him and felt that he had improved quite a bit by the end We then went out to the harbour where we taught them the strokes and edging then played a game. I took one group and Jake and Jono took the other.

Date: 8/05/13
River: Grey high pool then Kiwi corner
Clients: John Paul Students with Jake and Jono
Duration of activity: 4 hours
Incidents/injuries:
Started rolling in the pool session as well as some rescue stuff. I went over the demo roll. Then we went to kiwi corner and did more work on strokes and edging and introduced eddying. My group was a mix of abilities as two of the kids hadn't been at the days before session so didn't know the strokes. Found it hard to keep them together and one kid ended up tipping in an eddy when I was chasing after another luckily Phil was there and rescued him.

Date: 9/05/13
River: Pool session then Taylorville
Clients: John Paul Students with Jake and Jono
Duration of activity: 4 hours
Incidents/injuries:
We assessed the kids with their rescues today and then ended the session with a game. We then went to Taylorville and practiced strokes and taught them about throw bagging as it was in their assessment.

Date: 10/05/13
River: Arahura, Red shed section
Clients: John Paul Students with Jake and Jono
Duration of activity: 4 hours
Incidents/injuries:

Today we went to the river and divided the group into 3 based on ability level. I took the best group as Jake and Jono are better paddlers than me. We had two first year students who had missed out on kayak week with us as well. Practiced eddying and fairing and assessed them for their test. I had a kid wet exit on the first 'big' rapid as I was not close enough to him. Jono and Jake had swimmers as well down one of the rapids which a lot of people tipped over on.

How to tie on kayaks and load trailer
Narrative: The day for me started at 12:30 as I had a hospital appointment, everyone else started at 8:30 where they learnt how to load a trailer and tie on the kayaks, wet exits and T rescue. After lunch we started paddling and how to do it correctly. At first it was challenging trying to keep your boat in a straight line but with a little practice we started to get the hang of it and could mostly go straight. We then moved on to the sweep stroke. Keith and Phil layed us down with the many parts for a proper technique and we were sent off to try it ourselves with varying success. Finally we put the different strokes together and by the end of the session we had improved greatly. We then got out and loaded up the trailer. A few of my groups mates taught me how to tie the kayak's on which involved a lot of knots. Overall it was a nice introdution to kayaking and got me excited about going out on the river.

River flow: Medium
River grade: 2
Duration of activity: Day session
Weather conditions: Fine
Incidents/injuries: Wet exits galore
Narrative: It was a 20 minute walk in before we got to the river. From there we split into groups of mixed ability with a tutor and our group also had Rata. The river was quite cold so I wasn't keen on swimming. We practice all of our skills and at one point did the Gisborne wave from eddy to eddy. Just before lunch Hugo wet exited and was on the other side of the river in a tiny eddy without a paddle. Our rescue did not go that well as we had just learnt signals and were not to sharp with them yet. There was one big rapid on the river that we scouted I wasn't feeling to confident so took another shoot down. Just after on the next rapid I got tipped over and wet exited. Surprising enough I was quite happy after this as I had held on for quite a long time. The only other exciting moment happened on the last rapid before the take out. We were truck and trailering down the river and couldn't see ahead of us that well. All of a sudden I saw Hugo and Rob turn towards me and start fairy gliding furiously towards river left. It took me a second to see the big rock I was heading towards and another to quickly follow suit. From there it was a quick paddle to the takeout.

2013

Date: 7/03/13
Trip location: Buller- O Sullivans rapid
Group members: Bex, Alice, Cady, Jake, Dylan, Jono, Logan, Ari, Watson, Taylor
River flow: Very low
River grade: 1-3
Duration of activity:
Weather: fine
Incidents/injuries: Watson wet exited when he failed hand roll.
Got in plastic slalom boats and paddled around getting use to them and practicing our strokes. Did this above O'Sullivans rapid where gates where set up. We had Jess and I was with Caty, Alice and Bex. Then we moved down to the top of O'sullies rapid and played around making some moves there. Then went to bottom. Was really nervous to do the 'S' turn at the top of the run as the waves were quite big. Psyched myself out but Jess managed to convince me to try it. I got over ok but didn't get onto my edge quick enough at the other eddy so almost went over but managed to somehow keep upright. Got back across all good though. The boats were really uncomfortable and hard to get into.

River flow: Very low
River grade: 3
Duration of activity:
Weather: fine
Incidents/injuries: Alice wet exited
Rolling session in the morning at the pool in our creek boats. We learnt the C to C roll which I quite liked and managed to get ok. Went back to same place as the day before practicing more basic techniques this time with phily j. Then went down the O'sullies section on the slalom boats. Was kinda nervous and ended up tipping and rolling on the first rapid. Was really stoked to have rolled back up and managed to keep a calm head underwater. Boosted my confidence quite a bit. I was feeling good for the rest of the run. Alice swam when her deck imploded. Learnt from that to try eddy out higher to look after your crew better. Rest of section went well apart from at Whale Creek Alice tipped again but rolled then tipped and rolled and Bex tipped and got t rescued by Zak who ran up onto her boat in his initial attempt. Somehow I made it down it unscathed which I was quite happy about.

Date: 9/03/13
Trip location: Buller- Doctors Creek
Group members: Bex, Alice, Cady, Jake, Dylan, Jono, Logan, Ari, Watson, Taylor
River flow: Low
River grade: 2
Duration of activity: Day session
Weather: Fine
Incidents/injuries: None
We did rolling again in the pool and I felt pretty good with my right roll and ok with my left. At the end we tied ropes to the ends of our boats and got dragged along the pool rolling to simulate rolling in a rapid and coming up on an edge. We then went to Doctors creek to practice our rescues. We did H rescue, T rescue, Hand of god, barrel rolling and releasing a cows tail underwater. I was nervous doing the cows tail release and rolling back up so did it in the eddy. After that we practiced getting an unconscious swimmer while still in our boats. We then did live bait rescues and carrying a swimmer in a rapid on the back of our boats which I found slightly difficult. We then practiced getting out of our boats in awkward spots and making a harness and abseiling with it.

Date: 10/03/13
Trip location: Buller- Earthquake
Group members: Bex, Alice, Cady, Jake, Dylan, Jono, Logan, Ari, Watson, Taylor
River flow: Low
River grade: 3
Duration of activity: Day session
Weather: Fine
Incidents/injuries: None
Today we took down the slalom gates over O'Sullivans rapid then went to the Earthquake section. We split into three groups of mixed ability. I was with Logan, Jono and Bex with Zak as our instructor. At the start we did 5 rolls and gave each other feedback on them then had a bit of a flat water paddle before we got to the rapids. We practiced scouting rapids from our boats and eddying hoping down them to check them out and pick good lines. We did some deep water rescues in the flat which was pretty cold. I had to pick a line for Logan and Jono to go down on the Earthquake rapid as I had eddied out further down. We did fairy gliding to get to an eddy at the bottom of the last grade 3 rapid. We also did rolls coming out of eddys which I was nervous about but managed to do ok.
